What does ERDO stand for?
ERDO stands for Emergency Relief and Development Overseas. Our name encapsulates our four areas of focus – Child Sponsorship, Food Assistance, Development and Crisis Response. Where there is poverty, hunger, disaster and injustice, ERDO is there on your behalf, "doing good".
How many countries does ERDO work in?
At any one time ERDO is working in over 30 countries around the world, bringing emergency relief during times of natural disaster and conflict while continuing to help families overcome challenges of poverty so they can build stronger futures. Our ChildCARE Plus program is currently running in 29 countries and we also have programs operating in other parts of the world through our ministry partners. When crises occur, these global partnerships allow us to extend our reach and respond to urgent needs, wherever they happen.
How are your emergency supplies and funds distributed?
ERDO works with community representatives living in the areas that we hear are facing crisis. We also work with other emergency aid and development agencies, churches and organizations. When emergency supplies and funds are collected, we assess the situation and decide which partners are in the best position to meet the needs of the people affected. We then channel the donated supplies and funds through them to bring food, safe water, emergency shelter, counseling and other essentials to those who are suffering.
When I give a general donation to ERDO how is my money used?
Your donations to ERDO's general fund help support important projects and activities we're running that may need additional support. General funding donations are vital to our work. They ensure all our relief and development projects receive the funds they need to be able to meet the needs of the people we're serving who are caught in desperate circumstances.
When will I receive a tax receipt for my donation?
Single gifts: When you donate a single gift online, you will receive an instant e-receipt. We typically issue one receipt for each gift you donate to ERDO.
Monthly donors: if you decide to donate to ERDO on a monthly basis, to lower administration costs to ERDO we will issue one receipt in February in the following calendar year. This receipt would include all other single gifts given throughout the year by mail or phone.

What does my sponsorship provide?
Your sponsorship provides the essentials of life to a child living in poverty. First and foremost, your child will have access to quality education and be provided with necessary supplies such as school uniform, textbooks and school supplies. Where applicable, other items such as nutritious food, personal hygiene items, medical treatments and healthcare, vaccines etc., will be provided to the child as well. Not only is your sponsored child helped, but their entire family is assisted by your support. The CCP Field Representative working in your sponsored child's community ensures that your support goes directly to that child and their family... they benefit from your care firsthand!
How are children selected to be sponsored?
ChildCARE Plus children include boys and girls, Christians and non-Christians, and all races and ethnicities. They are children living in extreme poverty between the ages of 0 and 16. Our caring in-country workers select children from desperate circumstances who come from families who have many children and few resources; child headed households and orphaned children, those who are cared for by elderly or chronically ill guardians, and those unable to attend school due to poverty.
How much does it cost to sponsor a child?
$37 is our monthly cost to provide for children in need.
What is the maximum age of a child I can sponsor?
ERDO’s child sponsorship program is designed to meet the needs of children and youth to enable them to complete their primary and secondary education. Depending on the educational system in the country where your child is from, you can expect that the average age for completion of the CCP program is between the ages of 18 years and 22 years. A child may leave the program earlier if their family moves from the area, if their home situation improves, or if the family chooses to no longer participate in the program.
What happens once my child finishes in the sponsorship program?
Once a child finishes in the ChildCARE Plus program you will receive notification along with a profile and photo of a new child to sponsor. If you do not want to transition to a new child or would like to support another ERDO project instead, please contact us.
Can I send gifts to my sponsored child?
While we know people love to purchase and send gifts to those they love, ERDO respectfully requests that sponsors send monetary gifts instead of gift packages of store-bought goods. We prefer that the child’s CCP worker purchase a gift on your behalf in-country because the local staff know the children personally and can buy something that best meets their needs, in addition to that, the gift money also helps to stimulate the local economy when gift items are purchased in local communities. There are also high customs fees, possible theft and loss associated with international shipments. Please never send cash in the mail. ERDO can accept your cheque or credit card gift for the child and then securely transfer the funds to the child’s CCP worker for the safe and efficient purchase of a gift.
Do I have to pay my sponsorship fee monthly or are there other options?
You could choose to pay the full year’s cost of sponsorship at one time which is $444.
If you would like to arrange a different payment cycle such as 4 or 6 times per year, please call our office toll-free at 1-800-779-7262 or email us at email@example.com. Our website allows monthly or annual payments.
What amount of my monthly donation reaches the child?

The remaining small portion is used for the administration of the program, postage costs, processing gifts, and communications that encourage other Canadians to become sponsors.
Can I write to my sponsored child?
Yes, your sponsored child would love to hear from you. In your welcome pack you will find the information to help you write to him or her. Please keep in mind that most letters and notes need to be translated into the child’s local language so please limit their length to something reasonable for our program staff.
