On June 24, two powerful earthquakes struck Venezuela just seconds apart, registering 7.2 and 7.5 on the Richter scale. In an instant, homes were destroyed, communities were shaken and thousands of lives were forever changed.
As of June 29th, Canadian media are reporting 1,450 confirmed deaths and nearly 50,000 people officially reported as missing. With telecommunications systems down and critical infrastructure severely damaged, including roads and electricity, the full extent of the devastation is still unfolding.
Even now, many families are without shelter, food or access to basic necessities. With the fear of aftershocks, families are left stranded, afraid to return to their homes.
Here’s how our partners are helping right now:
• 60 displaced families are sheltered across 3 temporary shelter locations in the Caracas area.
• 1,200+ hot meals were served during the first 5 days of response.
• A 24/7 national logistics hub has been established in Maracay to coordinate collection and distribution of supplies.
• 7 distribution centers and feeding sites in some of the most impacted areas are now operating.
• Alternative transportation routes are established to maintain aid deliveries despite road closures and restricted access to some of the hardest-hit areas.
