Honouring The Special Women In Your Life

This Mother’s Day, you can celebrate the women who have made a difference in your life by helping improve the lives of women and their families in northern Kenya.

Across the world, there are women faithfully caring for their families in the face of daily challenges. In northern Kenya, one of the greatest of these challenges is access to clean water.

Together, we can help change that.

Today, we are raising funds to build a deep borehole well in Goro Rukesa, a community in Marsabit County, where access to clean water remains a daily challenge.

And here’s the really beautiful part: A generous family has chosen to honour their late mother by matching every gift dollar for dollar up to $30,000. This means that your gift will go twice as far this Mother’s Day!

Life in Marsabit County, Kenya

Marsabit County, in northern Kenya, has faced years of drought and ongoing food insecurity. Home to over 600,000 people, over half the population in Marsabit County does not have access to clean water. For many families, access to clean and reliable water is not guaranteed.

In Goro Rukesa, a group of small communities within Marsabit, more than half the population does not have enough water to meet their daily needs. Existing water sources are often seasonal and can dry up completely during periods of drought.

When water is available, it is frequently unsafe, leading to illness which makes an already difficult situation even harder.

Limited access to water also affects education and livelihoods. Some young people have had to step away from school to help support their families, while opportunities for income remain limited for mothers, who have to spend much of the day collecting water from far distances.

How You Can Help!

ERDO, alongside our local partners, will be drilling a deep borehole in Goro Rukesa to provide safe and clean water for families.

The borehole will be 150 meters deep, have a solar powered pump and an elevated storage tank, along with piped distribution to a primary school and two other locations. This borehole will provide a long-term solution to the water crisis, significantly improving the quality of life for families in the community.

In many of these communities, the responsibility of collecting water falls to women.

Each day, they walk 5 to 15 kilometres to reach the nearest water source carrying heavy containers back home for their families. It is a demanding routine that requires time, strength and perseverance.

This responsibility can make it difficult to pursue education, to care for children, or to build additional sources of income. Yet, these women continue to serve their families with dedication and resilience.

Today, you can support women in Goro Rukesa as a way to honour the important women in your life.

What This Means for Families

Access to clean water can transform daily life in practical and meaningful ways for women and their families.

Today, your gift will:

  • Reduce the time and distance required to collect water for a woman in need
  • Improve health by providing safe drinking water for children and their families
  • Support children, especially girls, in staying in school, as they will not have to waste hours collecting water or leave school because of water-borne illness
  • Create space in a woman’s day for her to pursue work and stability for her family
  • Help bring greater peace and resilience to a community

In many ways, it is a simple gift but one that makes a huge lasting difference.

And thanks to a generous family, choosing to honour their late mother by supporting this project through a matching gift, your donation will go twice as far!

This Mother’s Day, you have the opportunity to reflect the care and compassion you’ve received by extending it to others. Thank you for responding with compassion, showing the love of Christ to families in need.
